Waikiki: An Analysis
“Waikiki” is a poem named after the island in the pacific islands, Hawaii. In this poem, Brooke, an Englishman, writes about his failed love. This poem is especially ironic because on a beautiful tropical romantic island of Hawaii, most people would expect poets to write about successful love experiences or romanticising about love. However, Brooke does quite the opposite, and writes about his failed love. This is in relation to his failed engagement with a girl six years his junior, Noel Olivier, as well as his failed courtship of another girl, Ka Cox despite being engaged to Noel Olivier. The first stanza of the poem gives the reader a general “feel” of how it is like on a tropical island. For instance, the first line, “Warm perfumes like a breath from vine and tree” does the effect by describing the fragrance given out by the trees on the island. On the last two lines of this stanza, he also writes, “And new stars burn into the ancient skies, Over the
