Election of 1968

In the election of 1968, no two candidates would fight for each other's votes more then Nixon and Wallace. In their campaign the two shared the same points of view on many grounds, which will be shown in the following essay. .
Wallace, who before the running in 1968 was thought to be "small time," and a southern racist. Wallace was popular with many southerners and is remembered to this day by a speech made and his campaign slogans. Wallace, said "Segregation then, segregation now, segregation forever." Also, during his run for governor of Alabama Wallace's main slogan was "Stand Up For Alabama," this would later be changed during his campaign for president to "Stand Up For America." .
Nixon on the other hand was looked on as the patsy of America before and during his presidency. After losing the election for governor of California in 1962, Nixon announced that he would no longer seek any government-affiliated office. However, many analysts say that Nixon took this time to rebuild his strategy for the run for President. After Johnson announced that he would not accept or seek another Presidential nomination from his party, this left the field open for two people, Nixon and Robert Kennedy. .
The main comparisons between the two candidates are those of how they felt about the troubles at home rather then outside the country. Both candidates were concerned about the growing violence that was in response to the war and the fight for civil rights in the country. Nixon thought that calmness had to be restored in America and ending the war with his "secret plan," and encouraging the civil rights movement. Wallace, of course also wanted to restore order in the country but thought that this could be done by stopping the "hippy" and bring back the traditional man of America. Wallace, of course was for segregation, and while Nixon was not, he did not do much to try and stop this during his Presidency.
