Inate Evil
Immoral actions often arise in people respected by society. In A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley innate evil becomes evident in certain characters that has been held in their bodies for many years. Many of these characters dislike fighting and wan t to keep peace within the family, while others have certain priorities, such as making money, that they value more than their relatives. Nevertheless, every one of these people contain both morality and immorality, and both of these traits surface at dif ferent times throughout the novel. Because these characters live in a dysfunctional family, deeper enmity and vengeance tend to prevail among the characters. If they led a well-functioning life, they may not have all of the malevolence built up inside, ye t even if they had perfect family lives, they could never void themselves of all immoralities. In this novel as well as in King Leer people generally want to be good, yet human nature combined with a lack of order causes evil actions to arise becau se individuals desire to benefit themselves at all costs. In King Lear, two of the daughters as well as the King put their desire for power and money ahead of their family. King Lear gives up his kingdom to benefit his family after he can no l
Similar to those of Caroline, some of Ty's dreams also end up hurting loved ones. Ty dreams of owning this farm to which he feels entitled. He has finally achieved this goal when Larry gives up the farm. Later on in the novel, Rose and Ginny fight with Larry which results in his desire to take the farm back. Instead of siding with his wife, Ty blames the loss on her and her sister. After the possible loss of the farm, he states, "I was working around your father! I was bringing him into things bit by b it. I never thought it would be easy, but I thought I was making progress, and then you women just wrecked it, you just got him all fired up-"{261) Because Ty has such a desire to win the farm, he will sacrifice his relationship with Ginny to accomplish t his goal. He blames the loss on Ginny and loses sight of his love for her solely because he wants the farm more than anything. All of the characters do not set out to hurt others. They generally have good intentions, for ambition can be a positive charact eristic. Yet when they put this ambition over their family, they start having problems. At this point the evil in their personalities emerges. Unfortunately, ambition blinds these characters and they cannot see the harm they cause their families at the sa me time. Their greed eventually destroys the family because without the ability to cooperate and work together, these individuals cannot live together. Similar to Larry, King Lear had ambition, for even after he gave up his kingdom he still wanted power. Yet because he could not try and work out a plan to share the land with his daughters instead of demanding it all for himself, the evil in his personality arises. King Lear desires power so badly that he will do anything to get it, and this weakness begin s to destroy his family. His greed begins to control how he thinks which causes him to ignore anything that his daughters say to him. Without any cooperation, the family cannot exist. As well as her sister, Rose also refuses to accept blame which causes malevolence in this book has to do with Rose. After Pete has died, Rose tells Ginny that she stole Jess from her because she was selfish and jealous. When Ginny asks Rose if she want ed everything for herself, Rose states, "Well, shit yea. I always have. It's my besetting sin. I'm grabby and jealous and selfish and Mommy said it would drive people away, so I've been good at hiding it." (304) After Rose tells Ginny that she only stole Jess from her because she was selfish, Ginny tries to kill her. If Rose would have accepted the responsibility for her actions instead of hiding the truth and apologized to her sister, then they could have had a reconciliation. Because Rose feels no remor se, even more problems arise in the Cook family. Many of the characters do not mean to hurt others; however, when they do so, they have weaknesses of not being able to accept the responsibility of their actions. These individuals feel that if they admit t heir errors they will be the bearer of all the family problems. Therefore by not telling the truth they can put the problems on someone else. Unfortunately, this denial only further complicates the problems. If they would admit their error and apologize m ore forgiveness and less enmity would result. The two daughters in King Lear do not feel guilty when they lie to their father to receive his land. They tell him that they give all their love to him, which obviously cannot be true. Cornelia, tells t he truth and she receives no land. If the daughters had felt guilty about their lies and all told the truth they may have avoided their family problems. Like their father though, they have a weakness in allowing their desires for power to take over their thinking. Often people desire to succeed so badly that they will hurt those they love to do so. Their greed stifles any good intentions because of uncontrollable ambition. Larry, who has built up the farm to one thousand acres, exemplifies someo
