The songwriter writes the music in the same way that an author writes a story and the publishing company prints the material for sale. Publishing companies show the importance of written music and separate the person who wrote the music from the person who recorded it (if indeed they were two separate people). There are very few independent publishing companies, most are affiliated with record companies, especially ‘majors.’
