and the Way His Literature is Involved In AmericaEdgar Allan Poe, a marvelous poet, critic, storyteller, and person has affected the American people, and has populated and influenced American literature profusely. With all of Poe’s hard work, dedication, and compulsion to literature America has come to attach importance to it. The people engulf themselves in his work, and American literature all together has been influenced by Poe, and also has many superior things to say about it. Edgar Allan Poe was thought of as a grotesque, strange, and grave writer, but is Poe and his literature really all so bad? American readers love the reality, fiction, and creativeness of Poe because he has opened a new world which we had never seen before, and all of the ideas that the American readers had ever seen were really only planted in their imaginations. The twentieth century held an important place for Poe. His stories and poems became very popular in America, and it took a spot in American literature. When Poe’s literature started becoming more popular in America, the public had forgotten about writers who had been much more successful then Edgar himself in his day (Streissguth 105). Poe created beautiful verse, impressions, and images in the minds of his readers. People adore when they can see what they are reading so much better then just reading without a mental picture. With Poe, the reader can feel more involved and more intrigued to keep reading. Poe did this all with his vivid imagination, whether it was beautiful or gruesome. To the sensitive American readers, the new Literary author Poe and his literature affected the people very much. When Poe’s literature came to America there was a new way of writing, and it was described as “it gets to you” (Hancock 113). Another reason Poe has taken under his wing the reader’s of America is because he writes so that the reader never knows what will happen next. Everything in his works is much unexpected. His twisted theories and bizarre tales always have the readers wondering what will happen next. This way of writing especially keeps the reader coming back for more. Edgar’s name became synonymous with the popular horror genre (Streissguth 90). Another reason Poe became so popular and influential, and part of American literature was because his supernatural tales provided the Americans readers with an escape from their own world of reality. Because some of Poe’s literature is related to his own real life, many people sympathize with his struggles like death, divorce, alcoholism, struggle for success, love of beauty, and his feeling of isolation from the rest of society. Many people can relate to him whether it came from his poems, stories, criticisms, or his own biography. It is the human nature and curiosity of a person’s mind which intrigues the reader to read his literature. And it was in his own determination that people will continue to keep reading his works, keep understanding his thoughts and ideas, and even be influenced to write like he did. The magazine Southern Literary Messenger got a national reputation after Poe became editorial management. It became so well noticed because of Poe’s remarkable work as a poet, storyteller, and critic. The Southern Literary Messenger got an incredible amount of contributions and support after being brought into America; all because of the work that Poe had put into it. Another reason it was so well liked was because it involved what people wanted to read about, and not just the normal stuff that comes in magazines. The magazine covered articles which included literary movements, and also included history and economic problems as side issues. The majority of works in the magazine came from the southern states of America. Its chief value lies in the fact that it is a great storehouse for the history of southern life and manners (Larned 199). In addition to this one of Poe’s anonymous fans wrote “Here is one of the finest scholars, one of the most original men of genius, and one of the most industrious of the literary profession of our country, whose temporary suspension of labor, from bodily illness, drops him immediately to a level with the common objects of public charity. There is no intermediate stopping-place, no respectful shelter, where, with the delicacy due to genius and culture, be might secure aid, till, with returning health, he would resume his labors and his unmortified sense of independence” (An Appreciation 1). This speech being written towards Edgar Allan Poe is just one of the many personal contributions given about Poe by the American readers. Poe was an incredible critic. When his thoughts and ideas were brought to American, people at first were very dumbfounded. They couldn’t comprehend why and how to take some things that were being said. People then started to understand and then some actually started to side with Poe. Some of the American readers did this because they realized
