Bokononism

Since the dawn of time people have searched for the meaning of life and through that search many have turned to religion. In the novel, Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut, there is a fictional religion called Bokononism. Bokononism is the only religion that admits it is all a bunch of foma, or lies. Bokononism is a religion that could lead to the destruction of the world. Bokononism is a destructive religion because it allows people to be self indulgent and there are no principles to base a foundation on. I am in no way saying that Bokononism is real or that I think it will ever actually lead to the destruction of the world, but in theory Bokononism, if ever real, would destroy the Earth.

What is Bokononism? It is simply a religion that is based on lies and founded to make people feel better about themselves. Bokonon himself tells everyone his religion is bogus in "The First Book" Bokonon says, " ' Don't be a fool! Close this book at once! It is nothing but foma!' Foma, of course, are lies (265)." Now any person who can believe lies isn't a mentally healthy person. If a person tells a lie long enough they begin to believe it. The only reason this religion was made is to make people happy in the Books of Boko

Since Ice-nine was created to eliminate mud, it was created to eliminate man. Because Bokonists believe in fate and other pre-destined fates, they take life and death very lightly. Felix Hoenikker is not a Bokononist, but he has some of the same principles. In the end, Papa Monzano used Ice-nine to commit suicide, not thinking of any consequences of his actions because Bokononists think only of themselves. Frank, a Bokononist, thinking only of his needs cleans up the mess and orders a fire to be constructed to melt the ice-nine. He didn't insist that the bodies (the doctor got frozen too) be thrown in there immediately. He wanted the celebration to go on and then put Papa's body in the fire. Because of this great error in judgment, because of his self-indulgence, the world is destroyed. There is no mourning in this because there are no consequences. In Bokonon's religion, you can be anyway that you want to be because there are no consequences for your actions, this in and of itself is also dangerous.

Now this sounds nice. I'm sure everyone wants to be happy and to have life make sense. This fundamental belief that life should be fun and there are no consequences is destructive and harmful. By suggesting that life shouldn't be hard, you are also suggesting that there is nothing to work for. If there is nothing to work for then why work? Why do anything? This hopeless
