The average American child will have watched 100,000 acts of televised violence, including 8,000 depictions of murder, by the time he or she finishes sixth grade. In conclusion I’ll have to admit when I started to write this paper I was an against the theory that violence on television causes children to become violent and in doing research the number of books, articles, web sites on how violence on television does cause children to be violent was overwhelming I still believe after viewing the number of firearm deaths involving kids aged 0 to 19 shows that while violence on television has increased deaths involving kids using firearms have decreased. I think the studies about children who watch violence on television and become violent is outdated and should be updated and not relied upon by people as an easy way to place blame on television and not how children are raised. Parents today still believe that children these days are more naïve and are not able to distinguish between real violence and television violence that children are not capable of understand the difference when in fact children today know a lot more than when their parents were kids. Today’s children can do anything on a computer while some parents don’t even know how to turn it on and since violence is every where nowadays kids are able to talk about it more with adults or parents so they will be able to understand how violence should not be a part of their lives. Parents must remember if there is no value system at an early age then can they expect them to obtain one later in life? In most cases the answer is no. I have watched violence on television since I was little I also have played violent video games and watched violent movies, but I, myself, am not violent. Just because I’ve watched violent shows or movies hasn’t made me in any way want to be violent or mad me more aggressive. Violence has had the opposite affect on me because while others watch the police shows or movies and see the violence I see the police helping people and trying to catch the criminals.
