Development is separated into two parts, social and economic development. It involves measures of productivity, incomes, purchasing power, and consumption. The development occurs in wealthy countries but has a huge effect on the poor countries. They affect them by multinational corporations and putting sweat shops in these poorer countries. Multinational corporations are companies that are moved to other countries so the product can be made for cheaper than in the U.S. Sweat shops are basically the same thing, but the working conditions are much worse. The companies are put into third world countries and the people working in the factory get paid very badly and are overworked. The richer countries making more money and cheating the poorer countries out of money. The economic and social changes that are associated with development are the structure of the regions economy, which would be a shift from agriculture to manufacturing. They also keep track of the GNP, gross national profit, which lets you know where you stand in the worlds economy. They also trace how countries are developing and at what pace.

The stages of development deal with four main concepts. 1. traditional society is what you start off with. You have a limited technology and have a static society. This is a simple stage where your country doesn’t have much and is just starting off. 2. Pre conditions for take-off, this is like prepping before you do something. You have commercial exploitation of agriculture and extractive industry. You are beginning to develop or taking steps to moving ahead. 3. The actual take off, you develop a wider industrial and commercial base. You are expanding your horizons and making the means of getting food or whatever else you need, easier. You want it so people come to you when they need something. 4. High mass consumption, when you actually own or have possession of the majority or could get you hands on it if you needed to.
