Effects of the TV

In today’s world most people turn to the television for some relaxation and an escape from the real world. It’s when the television world is brought into the real world by those people who are influenced by what they see and hear does it ever become a problem…or does it? It is true that most of the ways people are influenced by television are negative ways, but not all are bad. People are influenced by believing what they see or hear is real, and than making it their own belief. People are influenced subconsciously; they not only see an act on television and decide “hey, that’s a good idea...I'll do that”, but they see something so often that it becomes implemented into their minds as commonplace. Other things such as exaggerations, distortion of reality and flat out lies do not always come with a disclaimer stating “this is an electronic signal you are observing created for your entertainment”, nor do reality shows or newscasts which might state opinions of others. In the paragraphs to come we shall explain how television affects society in certain specific aspects such as violence and politics.

Amongst all the negative influences television has on society, one of the most relevant and discussed probl

Other groups have also benefited through representation on television. African Americans used to be ridiculed on television in the early days through shows such as Amos and Andy and other vaudeville and minstrel type characters. The NAACP worked hard to get these stereo types removed. Other characters such as Buckweet were seen as stereotypical characters. In the 70's and 80's African Americans were given higher roles and their own shows which showed them as more respectable people, but was that a way television was mirroring society? Either way these new shows forced images of African Americans as more than the bottom of society into white homes all around America and can very well be credited as a force that reduced racism in America.

“Children may be more fearful of the world around them”. This is also known as the “mean world” syndrome. When young, believing that the world is out to get you and that random violence happens at every street corner will have a drastic effect on socialization in later years. People will be unwilling to help each other. The people talking on the streets, asking directions, asking to break a dollar…all that will be history if this syndrome were to take over everyone. This “mean world” syndrome can create stereotypes and nasty attitudes. Due to misunderstandings violent incidents are more likely to occur if some is to think that a mistake was done intentionally.

“Children may be less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others”. This is one of the three major findings that psychological research has found. This is seen when children fail to help each other or get help when another is in trouble or involved in a fight with another person. This in tern will make the general public less sensitive to things such as war, finding it commonplace for people to be hurt and killed. People will become less likely to help another, such as the final episode of Seinfeld where the cast watched a man get robbed and did nothing to help him.
