Moreover, Robert Ross changes throughout his life and he exemplifies both the best and worst qualities of human nature. In the beginning of the book Robert is confused by the war and he starts to see images of bad things repeating in his head. Robert is with a prostitute and the war has caused him to do something he would normally not. “…he went on hearing and seeing everything he’d heard and seen in his mind and his mind began to stammer the way it always did whenever it was challenged by something it could not accept” (Findley 45). The depressing time has caused Robert to remember the past when he was innocent and when he did not think of sleeping with a prostitute. Robert is hurt from the war and it brings out one of his traits, which is to hallucinate. The war affects him to a point where he keeps getting bad thoughts into his head and he cannot forget about them. The war also let Robert make new friends, which helped him along his long journey. Robert helped Harris when he was in need and as a result he shows the reader that war is not only a time to care for oneself. “It was because of Harris’s illness that Robert became involved with the horses” (Findley 59). Robert decided to assist his friend since Harris was unable to tend to the horses. The horses were actually a reminder of Rowena since they were innocent animals and by Robert caring for the animals it showed his love towards both Rowena and Harris. On the other hand, Robert caused the death of an innocent man and he forever remembered this. Robert is so involved in the war and as a result he uses his soldier instinct when the German is reaching behind for his binoculars Robert shoots the man. “The shot that had killed him rang around and around the crater like a marble in a bowl. Robert thought it would never stop” (Findley 130). The war has brought out the worst quality in Robert and that is he has turned into a murderer. Robert kills an innocent man and later regrets his actions since he realizes that war does not always have to end in death. Robert portrays a man who does not think of the consequences of his actions and during his life he reminisces on the past
