Ros And Guil

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, by Tom Stoppard is an existentialist play that

examines the events that happen in the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, from the point of

view of the common person. In the play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern achieve very little,

anything that they do is counteracted by an event so they are now further along. The one thing

that they achieve is their own deaths. According to the player, “In our experience most things

end in death.” (Stoppard 123). This is the case with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead; it

ends in death. This is demonstrated through the play they question their very existence, putting

forth the theory that if they do not exist, than they really cannot be alive and so, are in fact dead.

The imminence of their deaths are obvious as throughout the entire play; everything that they do

seems to focus on dying or foreshadows their very deaths. Throughout the play, Rosencrantz and

Guildenstern question their use as people on this planet. As the play goes on it becomes more

and more obvious that the fulfilment of their destiny will come only with their deaths.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are not able to convince themselves that they are alive,

“A Chinaman from the T’ang Dynasty - and, by which definition, a philosopher -

hand experience in the subject. It is the very fact that the players specialize in death that

me now you-” (Stoppard 126). That little statement shows that they knew it was coming and they

of living if you are just going to die? The common idea supporting existence is questioned when

practically everyone still on his feet? My goodness no - over your dead body.” (Stoppard 79).
