Dead poets society is a story about a new teacher at a boys boarding school. He tries to change the lives of the students so they can make their own choices and live while they have the chance. John Keating, who is the new teacher, uses his own unorthodox way to make the students learn, which isn’t highly regarded among the other teachers.
In the first lesson the students have with Mr. Keating, he takes them to the hall where old pictures of students are hanging. He tells the students that the boys in the pictures went to school at Welton long ago, but they are gone now. Mr. Keating whispers ghostly “carpe diem, seize the day”, and by that he means use the time you have now instead of waiting and maybe never get the chance to do what you want. This is one of the messages in the movie and one we could all learn from. When Knox falls in love and wants to call Chris, the girl he is in love with, he takes a big risk and he has to take it or leave it, since she already has a boyfriend, he nearly gets beaten up, but still he doesn’t give up.
Neil Perry is another student who wants to follow his dream of being an actor. His parents especially his father is not very happy about his son’s choice and wants him to be better
The main message, I tehink, is to follow your dreams and somehow make it work out, even though it isn’t always easy.
The movie takes up the discussion between dream and reality, realism and romanticism.
