Freeze

The word "job" to me does not mean what it does to many other people. To a lot of people a job means that you must go to some place, slave over your work, and typically have absolutely no fun except the occasional funny antics a co-worker might end up doing. To me a job is much more; I have had experience with "jobs" since I was twelve years old. Not mowing lawns, not delivering papers...designing and maintaining a fully functional and surprisingly successful Internet business.

When I was 12 I was really interested in the Internet and extremely interested by large mainframe type computers, I don’t really know why but the immense power of these huge computers intrigued me. I would always visit sites about "legacy" hardware (very old sometimes ancient computer systems).

One day I stumbled upon a site that had pictures of a typical late 70's mainframe. I looked around on the site and saw that the owner’s e-mail address was at the bottom. I e-mailed the given address and asked a few questions about the computer, and the owner’s name was Jon. About three days later he replied and gave me his user name for a “chat” service so we could talk. We talked for a very long time and it turned out his father was big time into setti

Soon we decided to try to make some money, so we signed up for an Affiliate program. The program worked much like TV commercials do, companies put ads onto our sites, and our users sites, and every time someone clicked an ad we were paid a nickel. At first, it didn’t seem like much, but as you will soon see, it adds up. For the next two months I learned a lot more about computers and the Internet than I would have any other way – with a real life experience. There were a lot of people trying to rip us off, people putting up illegal programs, and people removing ads from their site. I ended up designing software to scan the entire site for things like this and it ended up working out well.

After about six months, the server’s software needed to be re-written again, but Jon couldn’t do it. He e-mailed me and offered me $500 to fix it, I turned it down saying I would do it for $2,500, and I knew he had the money for it. He said he would find someone else, although I don’t think he ever did.

October 14th 2001 Freeze Webhosting went out of business because its server crashed and lost everything that it had on it. 36,000 or more users lost all their personal, or business websites due to the fact that the owner did not even know how to add better user capability.

I re-wrote everything for the last time and made it capable of handling 32,000 users. Six months later we had 16,000 users and there were three people in our “staff” and only one of them was 18. The business made about $8,000 a month in total profit. This is about the time I started to wonder why me Leenas were only getting $200-$300 a month. I ended up looking into the bank accounts of the business and soon noticed how much I should make from it. When I approached the owner, he said that we had to fix one more thing and he would give us our full pay out.
