Boom - Chrysalids

The novel The Chrysalids written by John Wyndham is based on the despair of our society in the past, present and future. Throughout the novel, we are discouraged and somewhat disgusted by the way man treats its own kind. The town or city in which the survivors of the nuclear war live in is called Waknuk. The people of Waknuk refer to the nuclear war as the "Tribulation". This also ironically summarises societies eternal fight with itself, especially within Waknuk. It seems the people of Waknuk will not stop at anything to create a "perfect society" even if it means bringing the whole world down. Much of this has to do with differences. Many of these differences are physical and spiritual or mental. Residents of Waknuk are in the process of creating a "perfect" life, in order to preserve life. All their beliefs come from an ancient book called Nicholas' Repentance. This book is very much like the Bible to them. It provokes the destruction of "deviates". If anyone is found with a slight deviation whether it be mental of physical, they are to be removed from Waknuk and banished to the Fringes. The failings in society are apparent and are meant to make a point. John Wyndham displays some evident faults in our society, which we seem unwilling to repair. A common fault is our unwillingness to understand people. This is due to judgmental ways, stereotypical ways or prejudices. There are countless examples of this throughout mankind. Another problem with society is our cruel fixation on status quo. Does anyone know what "status quo" really is? People are so focused on being status quo, when no one knows what "it" is. The final failing in society presented in the novel, are society's constant attempts at dominance and/or control. People are always finding ways to better themselves. This is portrayed in the novel quite extensively.
