The gender gap in earning persists, with women employed in industry and services typically earning 78 per cent of what men earn in the same sector. British women can celebrate 50 years of progress in the workplace, but still lack sufficient childcare, are concentrated in particular jobs, and earn on average 18% less than men, according to the equal opportunities commission. Its statistics show that over the 50 years improvements in employment have been patchy, though significant. The pay gap has narrowed, the proportion of female managers has doubled to 30%, and the proportion of women working in the professions has rocketed from 8% to 42%.(guardian)

If wage differentials due to gender are being discussed, wage proportions and equality should also be mentioned. Generally, it is the employees with the higher human capital that command the highest wages. However, if women are not being given the same educational opportunities than men (due to gender discrimination outside of the labor market) they are less likely to earn the higher wages. This could also account for the differences in wages between male and female workers.
