Throughout John Steinbeck’s novel The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck develops a protagonist, which in turn helps to develop the theme that people’s greatest strength lies in numbers. Through the development of the protagonist Tom, Steinbeck is able to convey the novel’s central meaning. Steinbeck first introduces Tom Joad on the side of a road looking for a ride back to his old farm just after getting out of prison. During his four years at prison, he became acquainted with his own self. He did not come out of prison as a man full of anger and hatred, but rather as a man who lives in the present, devoting all of his life to the present. He believes that if he lives his life around more than just the present and incorporates the future into his present life, he will be driven insane. Coming from prison, Tom exhibits rare characteristics of people in his position. He has a strong benevolence for others as well as a rare moral confidence which will play a major role in his decisions in the future.
