relationships
Different relationships between people can change lives forever. Some relationships can bring out negative characteristics. My relationship with my parents has taught me that if I start something I should always do my best to complete it. I have learned to be independent and to look for the answers to obstacles within myself. My relationship with my sister has taught me to help others in the time of need. She also taught to me to listen to people before I try to help them in a situation. Both of these relationships have taught me that I should believe in myself more than I do because many times others view you as more capable than you view yourself. The book, The Color Purple shows many different relationships. Many of these relationships are negative. One of these relationships sticks out, not because it is positive, but because of the way it helps to change a persons life. The relationship that existed between Celie and Shug Avery can superficially be viewed as purely sexual. They enjoyed the fondling and arousal of lying naked together. However, I believe it had a much deeper meaning. The intimacy between Celie and Shug can only be described with one word; love. To Celie and Shug love was the comfort and security
These relationships have brought out the best in people. It proves that someone can show you who you really are and what is best to do. The influence of others upon yourself can be good and bad and you should ask yourself which do you want to follow. June and Celie both followed the path to bring out the best in themselves. They both did what was right almost all the time showing others that regardless of how bad your life is, once you are on your own you can make your own decisions on who you are and who you want to be. She thrived off of Shug and soon let her true colors show and got out of the abusive relationship. June from The Joy Luck Club thrived off of her mother’s constant competitiveness with Waverly’s mom. She was able to prepare herself for the American real world and be ready for any confrontations or problems she may encounter. Celie was a victim of this male dominating relationship. Mr.________ took from Celie, her strength, confidence and self worth. He made her believe that his control over her was justified. His mental abuse lead Celie to believe that she could not achieve and did not deserve a better life.
