ISLAM IN CHICAGO

Muslims in America stand at the threshold of becoming the second-largest religious community. In 1996 the Greater Chicago area has over eighty Islamic organizations and most of them attached to an Islamic center or a mosque. The estimated population of Muslims in Cook County and the collar counties is 350,000, almost 5% of the total population of the region. The Muslims have surpassed the population of Jews and many other ethnic groups. The nationalities of Muslims, wherever they have come from, includes Indo-Pak-Bangladesh subcontinent, Arabic speaking countries including the Middle East and North Africa, the East European countries of Albania, Bosnia and surrounding states, Turkey, Iran, Malaysia, Indonesia, Afghanistan and sub-Saharan Africa. In addition to white and Hispanic American Muslims, Chicago has the largest concentration of African-American Muslims in the U.S. It is a diverse community speaking a variety of languages, representing a variety of complexions and races, yet they are one community. The sense that all Muslims are one community is embedded in the Qur'anic teachings which makes all Muslims one ethnic group, irrespective of their geographical origin, race and color.

“What happened on September 11th in New York and Washington DC will forever remain a horrible scar on the history of Islam and humanity. No matter how much we condemn it, and point to the Quran and the Sunnah to argue that Islam forbids the killing of innocent people, the fact remains that the perpetrators of this crime against humanity have indicated that their actions are sanctioned by Islamic values.”

The Council has also, more recently, begun to meet with local, state, and federal officials, to discuss the concerns of Chicago's Muslim community, and facilitate more positive communication between government officials and the Chicago Muslim community.

In addition, last November, the Council and United Power for Action and Justice jointly organized the historic “Chicagoans and Islam” gathering of almost 4000 people of different faiths and traditions to celebrate diversity at Chicago’s Navy Pier, in response to the tragic events of September 11 and the retaliatory backlash against Chicago-area Muslims.

In more recent years the Council has been instrumental in successfully uniting Muslims from across the United States and Canada for the annual conventions of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), a national federation of Muslim organizations. The Council has been an indispensable partner with ISNA in organizing and running the conventions, particularly several conventions held in Chicago during the 1990s, when the Council served as the local host.

In the early years, the members of the Council concentrated on networking with each other, other Muslim organizations, and community leaders. Through these collective efforts, the Muslim community came to know leaders of other faith-based organizations, such as the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago and the National Council for Community and Justice. Consequently, a significant portion of the interfaith dialogue in the Chicago-area between Muslims and people of other faiths takes place through the auspices of the Council. The Council is a proud participant in interfaith dialogues with the Catholic, Presbyterian, and Methodist communities of Chicago.
