Prohibition of Smoking in RestaurantsSince we were little children in school, we have been taught of the harmful affects of smoking. Even those who do smoke know the affects, but they still choose to smoke regardless of the outcome. Innocent bystanders often suffer from those smoking. Airplanes and restaurants usually allow smoking, but what about non-smokers who must suffer from passive smoking? Smokers have a choice if they want to smoke; however, non-smokers do not have a choice if they want to breath cigarette smoke. Restaurants should prohibit smoking because of disturbance, secondhand smoke, and no loss of revenue. Having someone smoke while dining can be annoying and disturbing. Inhaling cigarette smoke not only smells bad, but also is harmful to one's health. In New York City, "sales tax receipts rose 2% in the city but dropped 4% in the rest of the state" (Martin). Also, in a Massachusetts, revenue in smoke-free towns rose 4%, while smoking towns' revenue increased by only 2% (Studies). Non-smoking restaurants are cleaner than smoking restaurants. "Half of non-smoking respondents in a survey of 5000 Massachusetts residents had rather go to a smoke-free restaurant" (Studies). At non-smoking restaurants, people can dine without being disturbed by injurious smoke. Obviously, a ban on smoking would not disrupt business but could actually improve it.
