MAUS
“ Maus represents a new strand of Jewish-American self construction… Spiegelman transgresses the sacredness of Auschwitz by depicting in comic strip images his survivor father’s suffering and by refusing to sentimentalize the survivor.” (Rothberg 665)Art Spiegelman (b. 1948) was born in Stockholm, Sweden. His father was a Polish Jew that survived the imprisonment of Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz. Art Spiegelman since childhood was interested in writing and drawing and his early interest was what started his career. He was spellbound by the underground adult comics and decided to create his own, one of his most publicized works is “Maus” which consists of two volumes, the first “A Survivor’s Tale” was published in 1986, and the second “ And Here My Troubles Began” was published in 1991. Mous is a convincing tale about a family's struggle to cope with the Holocaust, It’s both a biography of his father, who narrates the atrocity of life in Auschwitz, and Spiegelman’s autobiography. Maus consists of many small narratives, the story of Vladek’s life and his survival in a concentration camp, Anja, Art’s mother who committed suicide after surviving Holocaust and coming to America, and also abo
The comic “Prisoner on the Hell Planet” is an excellent addition to the Maus, I think that Art Spiegelman put that in to show the audience how much all this past had affected him, a son of a survivor, a second generation. In the beginning of the book he starts out not understanding his father, he is confused and feels animosity toward his father, and as the book progresses Art starts to develop a better understanding of his father and what Vladek went through at the time in Auschwitz. He feels differently about his father although we see throughout the story that he constantly ridicules Vladek because of his weird ways, and of how Vladek deals with little things in life. But at the end Art can cope with the past of his parents, he understands it better and he comes to peace with his father. In the mini comic “Prisoner on the Hell Planet”, Art opens up his emotions that are choking him and he lets out all the darkness onto the paper with his drawings. In this comic he addresses his feelings of guilt and animosity toward his parents. “ I could avoid the truth no longer- the doctor’s words clattered inside me… I felt confused, I felt angry, and I felt numb! … I didn’t exactly feel like crying. But figured I should! …” (101) He feels that the world has closed around him and he has no way out, his father is a wreck and their parents friends blame him for his mother’s death. “ Arthur- we are so sorry… It’s his fault – the punk! …” (101) He is expected to help his father to cope with the situation and to be there when his father needs him, no one thinks of what’s going on inside a twenty year old boy and how hard it must be for him. “ I was expected to comfort him” (101) Art is resentful toward his father and his religi
