Lord of the Flies: Piggy

The reason why I chose to write about Piggy is because throughout the novel Piggy's character is used to represent the intellectual side of man and act almost like an adult figure to the boys. There are many things that he does and that Golding says to support this. The three things that come to my mind that represent Piggy's place in the novel; he is a clear thinker, his appearance, and his symbolic losses throughout the book. Right off the beginning of the book, I can already see evidence of Piggy's thinking ability. .
Who is Piggy? Piggy is a short and overweight boy who wears thick glasses, he is an orphan who was brought up by his aunt, and he represents orders and democracy. He is afflicted with asthma and doesn't care to do tiring work on the island. Piggy tries very hard to cling to civilization, and tries his best to keep peace. Although he is one of the smartest boy on the island, but he lacks any social skills whatsoever, and has trouble communicating or fitting in with the others. His glasses are very important part of the book, as they are used over and over to start fires and it's their only hope of rescue.
I believed that Piggy is smarter than most of the survivors. You could see this because he was aware of the situation around him whereas Ralph enjoyed the freedom. He realizes the boys" situation and is thinking about how they are going to survive. He says "we got to find the others, we got to do something." With this passage, you could see indication of his intelligence. He says, "A conch he used to blow it he kind of spat you blew from down here." I think only a bright person would know the name of a rare shell and how to blow it to make a noise and call the others. Further on at the end of chapter two, Piggy compares the fire on the mountain to the fires of hell. It almost like he can "see" what is going to happen to the kids. .
Piggy is different from the other survivors, he is considered as an outsider.
