Of Mice and Men - Suffering
The time of the Great Depression has caused sadness and suffering of individuals of different classes, especially the lower class. Some, like Crooks, were always discriminated against and just wanted to belong somewhere; some, like George and Lennie, had a dream and lived just for the dream; some, like Curley’s wife, wanted to be something, someone important. Lennie has suffered in the novel Of Mice and Men, because of his simplicity. He was always afraid to say something stupid, because if he did George would not let him ‘tend the rabbits’. But Lennie also was suffering before he and George though of getting a farm. George used to play practical jokes on Lennie because Lennie was too simple to understand or get angry. “I used to play jokes on ‘im ‘cause he was too dumb to take care of ‘imself. Tell you what made me stop that. One day a bunch of guys was standin’ around up on the Sacramento River. I was feelin’ pretty smart. I turns to Lennie and says: “Jump in.” An’ he jumps. Couldn’t swim a stroke. He damn near drowned before we could get him. An’ he was so damn nice to me for pullin’ him out. Clean forgot I told him to jump in.” Even though George always complains how he would be better
