great expectations

1. Great Expectations, Charles Dickens, 1840-1850 Victorian Era

2. Pip-Pip’s real name is Philip Pirrip but as a young boy he could not pronounce it and was given the nickname Pip. Pip was an orphan since birth and his brother-in-law, Joe Gargery, has been his father figure, raising him alongside his wife, Pip’s sister. Pip has “great expectations” in that he wants to better his social status. In doing this Pip rejects those that care about him in order to achieve his goals. Only after the realization that he cannot better himself does he understand the value of good friends.

Joe- Joe Gargery is Pip’s father figure. He has innate intelligence and is a formidable blacksmith. Joe is a hard worker that is content with his status in life. He is highly sympathetic and a very moral man. He symbolizes Christ in his kindness and moral support

3. Mrs. Joe- Joe’s wife and Pip’s sister, had a big part in raising young Pip. She was more than twenty years old when Pip was born but stepped in and raised him. Mrs. Joe has always been hard on Pip using a heavy hand to discipline him and always keep him in line.

4. Our story begins in the marsh village the place of Pip’s origin. Most of its inhabitants are blue colla

He leaves for London to become a gentleman under the apprenticeship of Mr. Jaggers. He hopes to win the heart of Estella with his newly acquired gentleman status. Pip focuses on nothing but courting and impressing her. Not only does he fail to woo Estella but in the process he ignores all the people that have been there for him. In trying to gain a lover he loses all his friends

Black Widow-Estella’s dark hair is symbolic of the black-bodied black widow, and when she’s excited and flushed her reddened cheeks are much like the bright red hourglass shape on back of the infamous spider. Mrs. Havisham trained her to act maliciously toward males just as the black widow consumes her frail male lovers.

8. In the graveyard at the beginning of the story when Pip encounters the escaped convict immediately his lower social status is revealed to us through his dialect. In this following quotation, “And you know what wittles is?” he pronounces the “v” in vittles with a “w.” This proves that he was never given a proper education. This quotation starts off the novel showing how social status is im
