Since the beginning of written language, literature describing the adventurousness and heroics of warriors has been used to teach the importance of values and bravery. These stories often depict the journeys of warriors and the perils they encounter while protecting their people. Beowulf, “…Higlac’s follower and the strongest of the Geats-greater / And stronger than anyone anywhere in the world…”(Beowulf 110-111) is one such piece of literature that displays the importance of the values in the warrior society.
The most important values displayed in Beowulf are that heroism and bravery are to be valued more than one’s own life. Beowulf displays this quality throughout the story by battling two monsters that have killed many men. He knows that he very well may die, and has arrangements made just in case he does,
Some of these values still have great significance today. For instance, dying for a cause is still looked upon as an honorable way to die. Unfortunately, today many people aren’t brave enough to die for something they care about. A leader’s obligation to protect its people is also valued today. What would the people do if the President didn’t stop an attack on the United States? We would kick him out without a doubt! The difference between then and now is that the leader is not expected to literally go out and fight for his people, but he is still to blame if the people aren’t protected.
