The Battle of Saratoga
On October 17, 1777 came one of the most important victories in American military history. For on this day British general, John Burgoyne, surrendered the British army at Saratoga (Lamberth,2). Some call this battle a turning point of the war. They're right, because there were some significant events that occurred in the American victory. The whole ordeal started September 19, 1777 when the British army, under the control of John Burgoyne, began to advance upon the American camp (Ness,1). The Americans detected the movement of the British Army and notified Gates (Ness,1). Horatio Gates was the leader of the American forces in that area. He ordered Colonel Daniel Morgan to track the British with his corps of Virginia riflemen (Ness,1). They met up with the British Army in a clearing known as Freeman farm and began to fight (Ness,1). His army was shrinking and was not going to receive any help. The retreat march was miserable as they walked through mud and rain. They finally reached the destination of a fortified camp on the heights of Saratoga (Ness,2). General Gates had followed him with a force of nearly 20,000 men, who upon arrival surrounded the British Army. On October 12 Burgoyne called a council of war, which unanimously agreed that surrender was their only choice (Lamberth,2). So, on October
