very hot outside. The main character, Ticey, Lives on a plantation as a slave. The story

moves on into the woods as the main characters are traveling to Ohio. The main character

makes her way to another plantation where she marries a man who tames horses on that

plantation. She eventually moves into a small town in Ohio where she is oppressed by

strong racism and strict racial segregation.

The most important main character is Miss. Jane Pittman, formorly known as ticey. Miss.

Jane is a woman who was born in the 1860's and has spent her entite childhood and pre-

teen life as a slave and has had no freedom. After she gains her freedom she is still forced

to struggle with the civil war and racial segregation throughout her entire life. Then there

is Joe Pittman. Joe marries Miss. Jane on the second plantation. Joe is a horse trainer on

the plantation. Ned was another main character in the story. Ned was the son of a

woman named Big Laura. Big Laura was killed in a fight and ned was left in the care of

Miss. Jane Pittman. Also Corporal Brown wich

her. He asks her if she has ever been beaten. Then he changes her name from Ticey to
