In the story “Girl” a mother wants to teach her daughter how to be a woman, and how to be a respectful person in the real life. The mother wants to offer all of the advice to her daughter that shows the role of any woman in the society. To accomplish this goal, the mother has to teach her daughter about many things. She would instruct her daughter from cooking and cleaning to social skills and love. The mother knows that her daughter is not a woman, but only a girl who is not experienced enough to be on her own. Also she represents her daughter as a naive girl which has much to learn before becoming a woman. So, in this short story, the mother wants to prepare her daughter for adulthood and womanhood.
In the first part of the story, the mother explains to her daughter that a woman is in charge of running the household. And, to make her daughter responsible to run the household, the mother has to teach her daughter how to cook, clean, shop, and do laundry. The one of the hous
ework that any woman has to know is a house cleaning. So, when the mother says, “this is how you sweep a whole house,” the mother teaches her daughter how to take care of the house. The mother wants to teach her how to be responsible when she becomes a wife, or even a mother. To become a wife or a mother is not easy thing for any woman. So, before entering womanhood, all young ladies has to experience many of the strange things in front of them.
