Looking closer at the Daft Punk CD cover I found that there was more to the simple looking case then what meets the eye. Daft Punk is a group that consists of a couple of guys that are DJs and produce electronic music that has a mixture of a dance and hanging out feeling, but always gets your mind feeling the music. The main message I get when looking at their CD cover is that they are an electronic group. The artists’ uses the color black as an indices for night, because people associate black with night when it is dark out. The black background tells me that this music is about the beat and the artists want you to think of nighttime when you go out clubbing. Nighttime can also be a symbol of mysteriousness, because of what you cannot see in the dark, which is what a listener feel

On the cover there is simply the words ‘Daft Punk’ which is a symbol for their style of music that they produce. It is a symbol because it is their logo that appears in the same style of writing on all their CDs and products and is immediately associated with the DJs, even just the words ‘Daft Punk’ has an association. The Webster dictionary defines the symbol daft as, “psychiatrically disordered” which is a good description for electronic music especially Daft Punk’s music. The word punk is a symbol that confuses the viewer, because the music is defiantly not punk and doesn’t describe the DJ’s at all. It just adds to the mystery of the whole CD. The Webster dictionary defines punk as, “inferior in quality or condition,” which is a way that many people may feel at times. So by putting the symbol punk on the cover they could possibly be calling out for listeners who have ever felt this way. This simple cover works; it has a sense of mystery, simplicity, and directness that draws the viewer in.

Other images on the cover give the viewer a good idea what the music is going to be like on the CD. You know that there is going to be some oldies music because of the old book in the girls hand, by the way the cover looks aged and by the ten cents symbol in the corner like they used to put on books and magazines. These are all icons, because they looked this way during the time period the music and movie was set in. People associate these icons, because they remember seeing them on magazines, and seeing old books that looked similar to the one on the CD cover.

The CD case for the sound track for Pulp Fiction is completely different from the message that Daft Punk sends out. It is direct, immediate and obviously out to sell something whether it is a life style or just the CD in genera
