When Dante first begins his adventure in The Dark Wood Of Error, he has just realized he has strayed from the True Way. Each figure that he comes across represents something pertaining to his life. Virgil, who was sent to help Dante, represents Human Reason. A leopard, lion, and she-wolf represent malice, fraud, violence, ambition, and incontinence. All three of the beasts try to prevent Dante from reaching the Mount of Joy’s peak. After Virgil explains that he is there to help, he tells what Dante has to do. Hell is the recognition of sin. Purgatory is the renunciation of sin. Dante must past through the first to reach the latter. I think that Dante himself was becoming a part of each of the sinners described. That is why he decided to change his life around. Maybe in some cases of the more harsh sins, Dante had experienced only a tiny part of what he is describing. On the other hand he could just be describing so
meone or something that was in his life. Anyway, I think it was enough to scare him into wanting to change his ways. Maybe that is why he wrote this book. To educate sinners on the fact that they still have the choice to change their life around. I could go through each and everyone of the cantos and point out how it could have pertained to Dante’s life. That probably would have been simpler. But I think I covered that in my last papers. In the first cantos of the book, the sinners and punishments are very mild. Everyone at one time commits those crimes. That is why we go to reconciliation and ask for God’s forgiveness. As the book moves on though, Dante begins to get more violent and graphic. By the end of the book, I was kind of grosses out by some of the punishments issued.
