Pre-Columbian Art: Marine Life @ Mingei International Museum
As I purchased my admission and proceeded up to the 2nd floor, the intricate artifacts lying in their plexi-glass cases overwhelmed me. Soft dimmed lights hung from the ceiling providing just enough light to view the artifacts in their various tones and colors. Searching for themes and common displacement between various items. I found that bowls were placed next to bowls, and shells were placed next to the shells. Although walking a few feet or turning a corner would then elude that assumption. The placement of each artifact was in a categorized yet random order. I found various bowls and vessels throughout the gallery and in almost every section, although sculptures, shells, and tablets were placed in select areas that promoted diversity in the exhibition. The Pre-Columbian art displayed in this exhibition had a wide range of items that had been created in different points in time.
