Onions are the common ingredients found during the time of births, in this novel. Because the time of birth is usually full of emotion, onions can be said to have help bring out the delicious flavor of the dish. The novel starts off in January, where the birth of Tita takes place. It is ironic that “Tita was so sensitive to onions, any time they were being chopped, they say she would just cry and cry; when she was still in my great-grandmother’s belly her sobs were so loud that even Nacha, the cook, who was half-deaf, could hear them easily.”(5) This quote shows the parallels between onions and emotions. During the months of July and November, emotions run high even though births are not found. In these sections of the novel, sadness and unhappiness is easily apparent. In the month of “July”, mama Elena dies from poisoning of syrup of ipecac. Tita is already devastated from the death of Roberto, and the discovery of her mother’s death brings great sadness. In the chapter “November”, a lot of dramatic events take place. In this chapter, Tita is doubtful of her feelings towards John. She begins to second-guess herself, and decides to call off the wedding. “While you were gone I had relations with a man I’ve always loved, and I lost my virginity. That’s the reason, I can’t marry you anymore.”(222) This quote shows how strong Tita had to be to be able to confront John with her situation. “Two tears were sliding down Tita’s cheeks. Aunt Mary took her hand, very moved, and said in English: “ How wonderful to see a women in love weeping with emotion. I did the same many times when I was about to get married.” John Realized that these words could make Tita burst into tears and the situation would be out of control.”(223) Notice how Tita is described as only shedding 2 tears. This shows how her emtions are just starting to break through, and that she is on the verge of losing it.
