In the second half of The Great controversy, Ellen G. White begins by explaining a little bit about the great disappointment of 1844. The people of this time were full of faith and knowledge of the Bible. They were positive that they would know when something great or not would happen. Studying the Bible and/or praying began to lead these people to believing that the end was sure to happen in the year 1844. “Unto two thousand and twenty three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed,” Daniel 8:14. This was the verse that Mrs. White said “ hung in the hearts of many people.” It gave them the “fire to continue their path and what not.” Somewhere along the lines “days” got turned into “years” and they figured that the year 1844 was the last of the twenty three hundred. They discovered the real and true meaning of the prophecies foretold in their lifetime that Christ’s second coming was coming to the Holy of Holies at that time, and not to the earth. Like it was explained earlier that the sanctuary is a place where Jesus is to sit until his second coming.
“What is the Sanctuary?”, was a question that Ellen White asked and answered in her book. She says that the sanctuary is the earth where the ark containing the stone tablets with God’s Law inscribed on them sits.
