Stupidity Is a Normal Phenomen

Not long ago, my brother and I were driving down Main St. on a Friday night. We were pulled over by a police officer. The officer had time only to ask us for our drivers licences and registration, before we heard the sickening crunch of twisted metal. It seemed that a young man, who was driving a lifted Ford pickup, had been mesmerized by the flashing red and blue lights on the patrol car. Failing to look where he was going, he crashed into the rear of the four door car stopped at the light. It was obvious that he was rubber necking, and paying more attention to us than the road. With a frustrated growl, the police officer let us go. As we drove away, we saw the young man standing outside his vehicle wearing a foolish grin, shrugging his shoulders as the police officer spoke to him. I sat, amazed at the sheer stupidity of the driver, and his amusement in a situation that should be somber, or at least serious.

Through the course of human history, we have evolved from the ape. Some of our members have broken away from the normal process of evolution. Approximately 50% of the population seems to have lost common sense, become dumb, stupid, annoying, moronic, idiotic, rude, grumpy, and clueless. I think all of this accounts for the stupidity of society. Most of us do stupid things once in a while, that's ok. You laugh about it and move on. But when your stupidity starts affecting other people, then you are part of the 50% and there is no way out.

Specialists have tended to treat the development of the Western mind as a progressive triumph of intelligence over ignorance or perhaps stupidity. However, stupidity itself is usually explained as an aggravating, exceptional condition which just happened in isolated cases. Further examples are presented as if they are some kind of accident due to the perverse minds involved, and then the attention is focused on how people are overcoming that particular brand of idiocy. The fact is, that in every civilization, in every age, the record is full of examples of stupidity.
