Events Causing The Korean Conf
On June 24, 1950 the world witnessed the beginning of a new age of warfare. When Soviet 122mm howitzers began bombarding South Korean military positions on the 38th parallel it would help to speed up the Cold War that was just beginning between the capitalists West and communist East. Near the end of the Second World War, Soviet Forces invaded the Japanese provinces of Manchuria and Korea. When Japan surrendered the U.S. and Soviet Union decided that Korea would be divided with the Soviets in the North and U.S. forces in the South. U.S. forces helped to assist the new President Sygmund Rhee suppress the communist guerrillas. In North Korea the Soviet Union assisted Kim IL Sung, which created a communist system and assisted in the training of the North Korean Army. When the Soviet Union finally pulled out of North Korea many heavy arms were left behind. In South Korea the U.S. left none which would later come back to haunt the ROK Army in the first days of the war. In essence this wasn’t a civil war between two third world powers but the first of many struggles between the United States and the Soviet Union.
