phoenix and granny weatherall
This essay illustrate the likeness between two characters in two different stories, written by two different authors. These characters are different in race, age, and even financial status. They are, although, united by the harshness which they’ve had endured. This has caused their character to be formed into an independent, hallucinogenic character, who are driven by their own unseen force, but still drive a certain kindness out of people. The journey granny Weatherall is not a physical one. Her journey is one of acceptance that she will eventually die. "Although there are no physical obstacles, granny still has to overcome her own barriers that she has created in her mind."(start.at). She has to come to the realization that there is no getting away from it. She begins with her still thinking that she can do everything for herself and does not need the assistance of her family. Later on, it becomes steeper when she has to go over a mountain and into worse terrain. Afterwards, when she gets out of the cornfield, like granny when she was telling john how she did everything herself, it shows how phoenix’s independence has helped her in her path. Phoenix’s path then continues to increase in difficulty until she arrives to the city. Here is where she needs help in order to continue in her journey, not only in actually, but also in life. ”Will you lace up my shoe?”(Welty, 1355). The final step in her journey is when she leaves the hospital and is willing to start again the journey just to reach her primary goal, which is to heal her grandchild. Just as granny did, Phoenix took control once again and continued on herself. These ladies, although they a
