Prokofiev’s Lieuntenant Kije-

Prokofiev’s Lieuntenant Kije- Symphonic Suite, Op. 60 & Wagner’s Der fliegende Hollander (The Flying Dutchman)

On Thursday, November 29, 2001 The University of Florida Symphony Orchestra held an excellent concert for the students of Introduction to Music Literature. The students seem to enjoy the performance by The University of Florida Symphony Orchestra. They invigorated the student audience with their masterful performance of pieces from composers such as Richard Wagner, Sergei Prokofiev, and Antonin Dvorak. The concert consisted of pieces from mostly the Contemporary Period. The music works that were preformed at the concert by The University of Florida Symphony Orchestra included Prokofiev’s Lieuntenant Kije- Symphonic Suite, Op. 60. They also played Wagner’s Der fliegende Hollander (The Flying Dutchman). I loved that they preformed many different pieces instead of a select few. This helped mix up the flow of the concert. I was very impressed by the performance by The University of Florida Symphony Orchestra because they played at the caliber of professional musicians.

Der fliegende Hollander (The Flying Dutchman) had a conjunct melody with a staccato feel. This was unique to the other pieces played at the conc

The next piece, Lieuntenant Kije- Symphonic Suite, Op. 60: The Birth of Kije, was composed by Sergei Prokofiev. The piece’s melody was conjunct with a staccato. The melody of the piece was one of the strong points because it had a deep connection with the audience. The texture was polyphonic. This texture has a strong presence but seemed boring at times. The piece was unstable so it is labeled as more consonant than dissonant. A whole step was the theme of the key, so the piece was minor. The rhythm of Lieuntenant Kije- Symphonic Suite, Op. 60: The Birth of Kije was the best part of the piece because it was allegro, or it was fast paced. I really enjoyed this rhythm because it was a nice change from the other pieces preformed by The University of Florida Symphony Orchestra. The theme was triple. As with most pieces preformed in concert, Cavatina dynamics were forte. The sound of forte was well played and was still soothing to the ears. This piece was from the Contemporary Period.

ert. The texture, as with some other pieces preformed at the concert, was polyphonic. Der fliegende Hollander (The Flying Dutchman) had a more consonant harmony to it, which means that it had a stable tone combination. The key of the piece was very confusing to me but it seemed to have a minor key, I don’t think that it was major because major has a whole step. The piece had an adagio rhythm with a meter that was extremely confusing to me but I think it was triple. Der fliegende Hollander (The Flying Dutchman) was load, or called forteo. This dynamics gave the pie
