Slasher Movies
The film, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, amazed me in that it was not just your typical blood and gore slasher film that has become so typical of the genre. It has elements of suspense, revenge, horror, and indeed victory. Through the characters of Lefty and Stretch the ability of normal people to change into something else, the “potential lyncher in almost all of us” (King 785), is explored though two different perspectives. However, the movie demonstrates some seeds of the good inherent in all beings may lie within the most terrifying of shells. Although what I thought was most fascinating is how Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 truly demonstrates the duality of human nature at its most terrifying extremes.Sometimes we, as human beings, become driven by our desires and passions as well as our fears and emotions. The audience knows that Leatherface and Chop Top are waiting for her on the bottom floor of the radio station. And yet Stretch goes to investigate a mysterious bang while she is alone at the station, completely unaware of whom awaits her. This theme is repeated throughout the movie, placing Stretch into situations in which common sense would tell most people to stay away, but this type of curiosity is necessary to our psyches, it is the “irrational pursuit of the nightmare” (Solomon 795) that allows us to confront our fears and survive. As the character Lefty, the unstable sheriff who has a personal stake in the
