In relation to the White Racial Identity Model, I am certain that I am in the Autonomy Stage. I was born and raised in a multicultural community where blacks, whites, latinos, and mexicans made up the majority of the population. Growing up in such a diverse environment I had the opportunity to get acquainted with people from all walks of life. Being around and hanging out with black people when I was a child was second nature. I never really thought about racism until I got older and I realized that people made it a big concern. Being around African – American people my entire life helped me to understand and respect their values, beliefs, and history. I never accepted stereotypes or bias views that were given by white people to those of African – American decent. Why? Because I have had the distinct opportunity associating with black people my entire life. I have found all these prejudices and stereotypes about blacks to be untrue. My cousin has two children by a black man and my aunt has been with a black man for 14 years. In my perspective, that is an acceptable part of life. I have had blacks play on my athletic teams throughout my entire life. When I was a child it was normal for blacks to
The next issue I would like to expand on is my culture. I am German-Irish and am proud to be an American citizen. I enjoy engaging in and watching sports on a daily basis. Wrestling is a significant part of my life. I like to go out on weekends and spend time with family members whenever I can. I enjoy fishing and camping and do it frequently each spring and summer. I enjoy going to the movies and fine dining as well. I like to travel to various places throughout the United States. I enjoy learning about American History and culture. I like music very much and often play my acoustic guitar whenever I have some personal time. I like associating with people from different cultures so that I can understand and appreciate what it is that they enjoy doing. I like using the computer as a means of communication and for completing homework assignments for my grad classes.
As far as my religious beliefs are concerned, I have not attended church in over 20 years. I do not practice religion but my family is Catholic. I truly believe in God and pray most every night. But, I feel that I don’t have to get on my hands and knees at mass and read excerpts out of a bible to prove my faith. There are several reasons why I don’t practice religion. The most significant reason I choose not to practice religion is due to the problems that exist from religious indifferences. History shows us how much blood is spilled when various groups of people have different perceptions based on their religious beliefs. Differentiating religious beliefs lead to great tragedy and are accountable for most wars that have taken place since the beginning of humanity. By me remaining neutral within my own religious beliefs, I can avoid confrontation by not getting involved in religious debates. The next reason I don’t practi
