Sunday to Far Away
‘Sunday Too Far Away’ is a film about what the typical Aussie acts like, the movie is about shearers and it is set in vast outback of Australia. It is concerned with the exclusive male world of the shearers’ quarters, the shearing shed and the front bar. It is a desolate landscape of pastoral country it has vast distances and the problems of isolation and loneliness imposes in on their lives. It was set in the 1950’s in a small bush town fictionally called ‘Gimal’ but is actually named Quorn in Queensland. This small town is a representative of many railway towns where shearers gather at the beginning of the season before they ship out to their stations. ‘Timber Roo’ station is where the men gathered to work in this movie. Most of the shearers in the contracted group to Timber Roo station, well to most stations, are mates. Several shearers who went to work at Timber Roo station have worked in three different states. Which also underlined the nomadic and seasonal nature of the shearers working life. The shearers in this film sets out a perfect stereotype of what the typical Aussie is: Loud, obnoxious, swearing and carrying on, very machismo, sexist and the
These days it may be a bit harder just to start a conversation with someone and to gain their trust, it seems not as easy now as it was back then. The society today seems a lot scarier because you’re not sure whether the person your talking to is going to rob you or become your friend. It seemed also that they stuck together as mates a lot more back then than people do these days. The attitude of Foley and the other shearers towards Berry also shows a side of mateship. Berry is one of the younger shearers, who don’t fit into the shearers mould. Berry is introspective and shy, he neither drinks nor swears and he prefers writing letters to his wife to the sluggish conversation and occasional ‘manly’ sporting contest that help the shearers pass their Sundays. The machismo hasn’t changed up till now in men if only, just become worse. Men will always show their testosterone level before they show their emotions. The technology was a bit rusted and old in the movie than the equipment that is used today. The hand pieces, which are what the men shear with, are a lot better relied on today and a lot easier to shear with, that also puts a lot of speed in behind the shearer. Back then they were very simple but hard to use, also hard to start and stop which took time out of shearing which meant less sheep to shear. The wages where a lot tougher to live of off back then as well that may have something to do with the technology. The shearing combs where harder to use because they were more blunt and not easy to use which often meant cutting the sheep more. Grinding the gear back then was also more difficult than it is today; today it is a lot simpler and easier to do, simply because there is not so much fiddling around with getting the combs in to position to grind. The technology problems with long distances and isolation are easier deal with because of updated cars and little technology luxuries that are used for self amusement would be able to be used additionally today and not back then.
