Dave was a small, quite rotund skunk. He had luscious, shiny black fur with a broad, white stripe running down his back from his gleaming, button nose to the tip of his tail. His expressive eyes were a brilliant shade of blue. He was most gullible and might have even been considered more or less half-baked. However, Dave’s personality was pleasant and amiable. He could easily make a friend of almost any creature. Yet, there was not a creature around who wanted to be within a ten-mile radius of Dave. Dave had a slight problem: he produced an excessively abnormal amount of flatulence. In fact, the U.S. National Army had officially declared Dave a biological weapon. No one know exactly why Dave was so gaseous. Some say it resulted from eating too many cans of Bush’s Baked Beans. Others say it was after being exposed to too many cans of floral-scented air freshener in his grandmother’s home. Then there was the theory of his mother never buying him name-brand clothes. Despite the fact Dave was a relatively young skunk, he was, for the most part, alone in the world. His mother was deceased as the result of a dire accident. She made the untimely mistake of striking a match at precisely the moment her son released a cloud of r
“Grover!” he screamed. Summoning every ounce of his almost non-existent athletic ability, Dave sprinted after Grover as quickly as his squat, little legs would carry him. He reached the middle of the highway right as the car rocketed over his small body. The rear, left wheel clipped Dave in the head, knocking him unconscious. The little skunk was spun, airborne, three feet into the air and landed with a firm impact upon the asphalt. ank gas. The ensuing explosion constituted the final demise of his mother. Being not bright as he was, Dave did not realize he was the source of her cessation of life. After that, Dave tried living in a small burrow with a porcupine as his roommate, but in the small quarters they shared, bedtime soon became a most prickly situation. “Dave, come on!” he hollered impatiently, eager to be on their way. Grover marched along resolutely looking for an opening in the hedge as Dave bustled along behind. Presently, an opening presented itself before them. Grover halted, a gleam of self-satisfaction radiated from his eyes. He spied a car coming toward their direction from the horizon. An idea flitted into his head: here was his chance to be rid of Dave once and for all. He reasoned that in this part of the forest they did not know who he was and therefore he had a chance to start his life anew. The opportunity had never struck him before! Only one task remained: to be rid of his unwanted companion. Grover decided to wait until the precise moment before the automobile reached their location. He would tear across the road in a lightning blitz, and the car would fly by. While Dave’s view of Grover was obstructed, Grover would hasten into the shrubbery and be along his merry way. Dave would n
