The Return of Martin Guerre

The Return of Martin Guerre has various differences between the book and the movie. Natalie Davis wrote an historically -based book with description and background information. The film, on the other hand gives a broader overview of the family and town, and is more visual and artsy. Both the novel and film depict much conflict and confusion. In both aspects, it is a great, true story, containing love, betrayal, sadness, religion, community, and French lifestyle and government of the 16th century.

Natalie Davis constructed her book from a variety of sources: historical documents, paintings, court cases, and contemporary writings. Davis mentions how the peasants wove baskets, slaughtered pigs, plucked chickens, sifted flour, made bread, pressed grapes, cut grass, and knitted clothing. She also touches on how women were considered below the status of men of the society. When there was talk of women in Brazil who fight and rule, the men described that as “the end of the world” if it ever happened in their village. These


The Return of Martin Guerre had slight differences between the novel and film. The book was written in a more historical view point, which gave much more background and detail on the towns and family. The movie stayed suspenseful because of hiding the true identity of the imposter. It also helped with visualizing scenes and showing emotion. Through comparing and contrasting the film and novel, both are equally able to depict Martin Guerre’s return.

The film and book both show Martin returning towards the end of the story. The film brings a more suspenseful approach to his return, where as the book goes more in depth. The scene in the film shows a person with a wooden leg appearing out of nowhere claiming to be “Martin”. He hobbles directly in front of the judges and tells them he is the true Martin Guerre. After the “fake” Martin continues to try and convince the court he is truly Martin, and after Bertrande falls to her knees in front of the “real” Martin, the court quickly makes a decision.
