Hernando Cortez was born in Medellin, Extremadura, in 1485. He studied law at the University of Salamanca but cut college in 1501 and decided to try his fortune in the Americas. Cortez sailed for Santo Domingo (now the Dominican Republic) in the spring of 1504. The Spaniards and the allies were driven out of the capital by Aztec forces, which were led by Montezuma’s nephew Cuauhtemoc. On July 7, 1520, after defeating a very large force of Aztecs, Cortez finally reached Tlaxcala. There, during the summer, he reorganized his army with the aid of some reinforcements and equipment from Vera Cruz. Cortez and his army then began their return to the capital, capturing outlying Aztec posts on the way. On August 13, 1521, after an exhausting siege of three months, Tenochtitlan fell.
