During the late 1800’s, Buck a part St. Bernard and part Scotch Shepard dog comfortably lives at the wealthy Judge Miller’s estate in Santa Clara Valley. One day a gardener of Miller with a gambling problem sold Buck in order to pay off debts. There was a “gold rush” in Canada, and also a need for strong dogs to pull sleds. Rapidly, Buck was placed in an unfamiliar environment and faced many challenges. One of his first friends, Curly, he watched die. This taught Buck that only the strong survive. He had to adapt to the ways of wildlife. Watching and noting how things were done in order to survive. Spitz, an enemy of Buck, was ultimately killed leaving the leader position open which Buck graciously accepted. Throughout this long quest Buck meets a great companion, John Thorton. Thorton takes Buck in and cares for him greatly; in return Buck is loyal and finally has a friend. Thorton a
nd Buck are great companions and are together for many years. Finally, John gets shot with an arrow and Buck is left in the wild to be, as he wants to be.
