Drunk Driving: Public Enemy #1

On September 7th, 1991, Alvin Lee Gosney was driving home from a hard day at work. Mr. Gosney was a 54 year old respected business man from Miami. He was only two blocks from his house when a car driving in the oncoming traffic lurches into his lane. Mr. Gosney was killed instantly when the car crashed head on into his automobile. The reason for this accident and the loss of an innocent life was drunk driving. The driver of this car had been drinking heavily and has a blood alcohol level of 0.2, which is twice the legal limit for anyone operating an automobile. We can no longer stay silent about drunk driving when men like Alvin Lee Gosney are killed everyday; we must take action against this horrific crime (www.madd.com).

More and more Americans each year can say that in someway drunk driving has affected their lives. Every American should be ashamed that this has become true. The numbers of drunk driving incidents has become astronomical. In 2000 16,653 people were killed in accidents involving drunk drivers, while another million were injured. 2,238 of the people killed didn’t even reach the age of 21 (http://www.saddonline.com/). This number rose four percent from the previous y

The final problem with the DWI laws is that they vary from state to state. Drunk driving has become a very serious issue and it needs to be taken care of on a federal level. A government agency should be created to take care of DWI laws in this country. They could do research and administer tests to see what works the best in stopping drunk driving. This would stop the great variances in the DWI laws from state to state.

Another thing which needs to be looked at is the legal limit on blood alcohol content. Many states consider a driver impaired to drive when he has reached a blood alcohol content of 0.1. This seems ineffective when the organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving reports that impairment starts well below this blood alcohol content. Even the American Medial Association has supported lowering the blood alcohol content to 0.5. These drivers are currently not breaking any laws if they drive with a BAC under 0.1, but they are still putting people at risk. Laws should be changed to lower the blood alcohol content for DWI offenses.

Before you start to think about how serious drunk driving is, think about 33 minutes of your life. Now think that on an average every 33 minutes of your life someone will die in an accident caused by drunk driving. It’s hard to think that almost 48 times a day, lives are lost needlessly. Drunk driving has never been taken as a joke, but it was also never taken seriously enough. Protect yourself by contacting your local congressmen and by joining anti-drunk driving organizations. We can no longer sit around while our friends and our
