To maintain a state of this kind, certain equilibriums must be formed amongst the residents of the state to minimize conflict. As chemistry instructs, equilibriums between matter can only be formed when interactions, and there surroundings, are held at a constant. The same thinking can be applied to the equilibrium of a political state in that we have institutions, such as laws and social codes, to maintain consistency. Another institution that is essential when maintaining a diverse state is the practice of tolerance in the face of diversity. Sheryl practices tolerance when she questions the validity of her complaint against Jim. Even though Sheryl was offended by Jim’s actions, she still consulted knowledgeable sources to ensure that she was not being intolerant. On the other hand, Jim’s racism is obviously not an action that displays tolerance. Mr. Cohen echoes this point when he says “If this involved only his own person – adherence to laws concerning diet or dress, for example – you should of course be tolerant. But his actions directly affect you. Although politics most commonly refers to government interactions, there are politics with any human interaction. People practice politics in dating, in education, in work, and in countless other human interactions.
