By now, governments throughout the world are realizing that terrorism is a serious threat to be dealt with. The growing terrorist population is becoming more and more dangerous, with new organizations forming out of nothing. There are two major types of terrorism: those crimes committed alone and those committed in terrorist groups/organizations. Studies show that people that commit crimes alone are usually one of two things: Angry about personal infringement or they are mentally instable. Timothy McVeigh is an example of a terrorist whose plight was sparked by a sense of injustice. An example of a clinically insane terrorist would be someone like The Unibomber. However, those that belong to terrorist groups are usually well-educated and professional with their operations and very rarely get caught. Some are more violent than others though. For example, the Japanese Red Army embarks on such missions as airplane hijacking whereas the Palestinian Terrorist Organization, led by Yasir Arafat, prefers peace talks to violence. The missions always have a sense of purpose around them, though different individuals or other organizations may perceive them differently.

Because crimes such as this do not involve an easily foreseen occurrence, they are very difficult to predict and, consequently, prevent. The mental instability that is often associated with domestic terrorism also contributes to the complexity of its deterrence. The most efficient means of prevention in instances such as these seem to be normal law enforcement. If problems are realized soon enough, the crimes may be stopped.

Terrorism toward the U.S. is not exclusive to U.S. territory however. In the years following World War I, the U.S. experienced a seemingly endless economic and military growth. Inspired by this, our nation decided to branch its power to other nations, forming embassies throughout the world, where we could monitor global activity. This made a small political part of our country more vulnerable to foreign terrorism. In countries such as the Middle East, where hatred for U.S. government and politics are present throughout, embassies see lots of hardships. These same countries store biological/chemical weapons in caches in case of a war or other conflict. However, feeling threatened by the close proximity of these weapons of mass destruction, the U.S. has recently started frequent inspections in these caches. This is one more contribution to the hatred of the U.S. in the Middle East that is felt so passionately. This trend of outrage has been waging throughout the past two decades and cycles continuously in a circle of hatred and distrust.

However, this type of terrorism is not considered a growing threat in the world today. The instances in which it is used are only in cases where there are no other alternatives and occurrences are few and far between. Therefore, although eco-terrorism is always a viable option to terrorists, the government does not feel the need to direct much attention to the matter. Yet this “hands-off” approach could later prove to be disastrous as eco-terrorism is capable of a large amount of damage.

One of the most common and rising forms of terrorism is of the form: domestic terrorism. As explained above, this form of terrorism constitutes seemingly senseless acts of crime from lone and typically insane people such as The Unibomber. As of late however, a growing population of the nation’s domestic terrorists has recently shown its face in buildings considered nearly indomitable to terrorism: public schools. The most famous incident of such a crime is the Columbine High School shooting in Littleton, Colorado. This crime was committed by seniors Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, where they killed 23 classmates, one teacher, and then themselves in what was considered the worst school shooting in history. The two students were armed with four guns and dozens of pipe bombs, leaving their fellow students powerless against their rampage.
