Accupuncture
What is acupuncture? “Acupuncture is a method of treatment in which fine needles are inserted at specific points in the body to relieve pain and illness.”1 (http://www.acupuncture.com/#Are%20the%20needles%20clean) It is based on the thought of health and balance and can be used either alone or with current medical care. The use of acupuncture dates back many moons ago. “Stone acupuncture needles dating back to 3000 B.C. have been found by archaeologists in Inner Mongolia, and acupuncture has been widely practiced in China for around 3,5000 years.”2 (Woodham, Anne and Peters, David Dr. Encyclopedia of Healing Therapies. New York, NY: DK Publishing, Inc., 1997.) Then in the seventeenth century, doctors and missionaries brought acupuncture to Europe, where it slowly began to progress. “ In 1972, James Reston, a journalist for the New York Times, had an emergency appendectomy while in China.”3 (Woodham, Anne and Peters, David Dr. Encyclopedia of Healing Therapies.) New York, NY: DK Publishing, Inc., 1997When he described how it eased his pain after the operation he gave acupuncture a big boost. “Since the opening of China to the West after the 1970’s, many Western doctors have studied acupuncture techniques an
There are several different styles of acupuncture, including: Another traditional treatment is cupping, in which a glass or bamboo cup is used to create suction on the skin above a painful muscle or acupuncture point. Glass cups may be placed over the acupoints in order to draw qi and blood toward them. The practitioner creates a vacuum in the cup by burning an alcohol- soaked cotton ball in it and placing it on the skin. When the cotton has burned the oxygen, the skin the skin lifts into the vacuum. As with the use of needles and moxibustion the aim is to harmonize the body by influencing qi at the appropriate point on the meridian. The practitioner can also gain information about the patient’s condition by looking at the appearance of the skin during and after treatment: in a healthy person, the skin color quickly returns to normal. Acupuncture is certain to be even more widely used in the future, for many reasons. One reason is its cost-effectiveness. “Acupuncture is a comprehensive health care system, which means it can address most illnesses-acute or chronic, physical, emotional, spiritual-as well as help keep a person well. In a survey of five hundred and seventy five patients in five states, respondents said they most commonly used acupuncture for: · Wellness care-to maintain good health · Five Elements Acupuncture, an English approach, is based on European interpretations of classical Chinese acupuncture, and has proven valuable in addressing psychogenic problems. “According to a review by Dr. Joseph M. Helms of the world clinical literature, the use of acupuncture throughout the world most often involves: lesions (forty percent), pain (twenty-five percent), surgical analgesia (16 percent), and neurological disorders (10 percent), substance abuse (5 percent), and psychiatric disorders (4 percent).”10 (Pelletier, Kenneth R. Dr.. The Best Alternative Medicine What Works? What Does Not?. New York, New York: Simon & Schuster, 2000)
