Sadam Husein
Saddam Hussein, the president of the Republic of Iraq, was born on April 28, 1937, in Tikrit. He spent his early childhood in a mud hit in a mostly sunny Muslim part of Iraq. Hussein’s father died abandoning the family soon after his birth. His mother Subha married again but Saddam was sent away to live with his maternal uncle in Baghdad, because his step father supposedly beat him. While living in Baghdad, he began learning more than just reading and writing from his tutor Khayrallah. Khayrallah was “cashiered” from the Iraqi army because he supported a “Pro-Nazi” coup attempt that had failed. He had a bitterness towards the British and imperialism and soon rubbed off on Saddam. This time was one of the first times Saddam became interested in politics. He was later made Mayor of Baghdad under the Hussein regime and finished intermediate school at age sixteen and tried to get an acceptance at the Baghdad Military Academy. He has low grades and that resulted in being denied acceptance to the military school. This was another reason he became more deeply involved in political matters. On February 25, 1960, he was sentenced to death in absentia but escaped to Syria and then to Egypt where he completed his secondary school at age 24 in 1962. After the 14th of Ramadhan revolution he returned to Iraq on February 8, 1963. On October 14, 1964, Hussein was arrested for charges accusing him of rebelling against the regime. While in prison in September 1966, Hussein was elected Deputy General of the Baath Party Leadership. The next year, 1967, Hussein escaped form prison and participated in a coup to overthrow Iraq’s president and regime at that time (July 1968). Later that year he graduated from the College of Law, and November 9, 1969, he was elected Vice-chairman of the Revolution Command Council. He nationalized all of the oil companies in Iraq and was dubbed the rank Lieutenant general and the Rafadain Order First Class. He later helped to implement the Autonomy Law for Iraqi Kurdish Citizens and the Kurds were forced to go to Iran. He was awarded Honors Degree in Military Sciences , M. A., together with Staff Degree on February 1, 1976. A step up, he was elected Assistant General of the National Pan-Arab Leadership of the Baath Party once again on October 8, 1977.
