Goege Washington
Born in Westmoreland County, Va., on Feb. 22, 1732. George Washington of six children of Augustine Washington and his second wife, Mary Ball Washington. At the age of 16, he lived there and at other plantations along the Rappahannock and Potomac Rivers, including the river later to be known as Mount Vernon. His education was simple, as surveying, mathematics, and "rules of civility." After he lost his father in 1743 at the age of eleven. He was soon sent to live with his half brother Lawrence, who had served in the Royal Navy. Who soon became something as a substitute father for George. Since Lawrence had married into the Fairfax family, influential and well-known Virginians who helped launch George's career. But his mother discouraged the Fairfax family from doing so. Even though George was interested in a naval career. Instead George joined a surveying party sent out to the Shenandoah Valley by Lord Fairfax, a land baron. For the next few years, George conducted surveys in Virginia and present West Virginia and gained a lifetime interest in the West. In 1751-52 he also accompanied Lawrence on a visit he made to Barbados, West Indies, in an effort to cure Lawrence of tuberculosis, but Lawrence died in 1752. George in the end
Taking office (Apr. 30, 1789) in New York City at federal hall, Washington acted carefully and deliberately, aware of the need to build an executive structure that could accommodate future presidents. he governed with dignity as well as restraint. He also provided the constancy and authority the embryonic nation so very much needed, gave substance to the constitution and reconciled competing factions and divergent policies within the government and his administration. Although not reluctant to exercising presidential power, he respected the role of Congress and did not violate upon its prerogatives. He also tried to maintain harmony between his Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson and Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton whose differences changed from time, to time. Causing party divisions from which Washington kept neutral. Even though he supported many of Hamilton's controversial economic policies. The Bank of the United States, excise tax, and the assumption of state debts. Washington became the target of attacks by Jeffersonian Democratic-Republicans, though trying to stay aloof. produced a disciplined and well-trained fighting army. Washington’s strategy involved in constantly harassing the British, while avoiding large and costly battles. Although his troops yielded much turf and lost a number of battles, they persevered even during the dim winters at Morristown, NJ, and Valley Forge, PA.
