History is very important to us. History tells us who we are and where we came from. Since we cannot directly see history we can only see it through the eyes of one man who has left history for us to see. We must be careful when we look through one man. That is why it is so important to examine each writer and know who that writer is. When we blindly follow one path, which is the wrong path disasters occur. We, as people must be sure that we believe the correct thing. Tacitus was the greatest of all Roman history writers and his work is still being used as a source even today.
Cornelius Tacitus’ (ca. AD 56 - 118) most famous works include “The Histories” and “The Annals of Imperial Rome.” Born into a wealthy family living in Northern Italy, Tacitus received the best education available to a Roman from a good family. Public
Livy was a good writer but he was at one major disadvantage: he played no part in Roman politics. He had no personal experience of how Roman government worked. Therefore he was denied access to Senate meetings, texts, laws, and etc. that the government keep. Livy was indeed a great historian; he went back and rewrote the history of Rome or in his own words “the greatest nation in the world” from its birth. Livy was very passionate about his work, and he liked to do it “I shall find satisfaction in contributing … to the labour of putting on record the story of the greatest nation in the world.” Livy starts “The History of Rome from its Foundation” from the birth of Romulus and Remus “The Vestal Virgin was raped and gave birth to twin boys” and continues from there.
